NatureCalabria also signifies nature: National Parks, The Sila Mountains, such as Aspromonte and Pollino; Forests, lakes and a marine reserve. The 800km of coast characterize the diverse environments that are in the area, often wild and which are distinctive of contrasting weather conditions ranging from –20°C to +45°C, situations of extreme drought to frequent and violent floods from rivers and streams. Despite this, a huge richness can be found: Mandarins in January, Grapefruit in February, Lemons in March, Strawberries in April, Apricots and Peaches in May, Black Cherries in June, Figs in July, Cherries in August, Nectarines in September, Horse Chestnuts in October, Navel Oranges and Bergamots in November and Kiwi Fruit in December. We cannot forget the vineyards (Ciṛ), olives and citrus fruits (Corigliano), the wide variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, beetroot, peppers, the renowned Calabrian broccoli, the red onion of Tropea and wild herbs such as origano, fennel and rosemary. This is not to mention the forests which lie in the central region, where deep within can be found wild species sometimes rare and tasty, such as: Corbezzolo, Indian rock figs, wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries/mulberries, sorbo, not forgetting the humble potato, of which San Giovanni in Fiore is proud of, and the Porcini mushrooms together with the Agarico Delizioso of which the Sila boasts. This land also hosts a rich variety of fauna, both native and migratory: From the Woodcock to the Quale, the Hare to the Deer, the Wolf to a whole range of canines, not to mention the enormous variety of Birds of prey. In the Seas can be found the most common marine species, from the mackerel to the noble “Orata”, that along with the Swordfish represent the best that you can find. |
