The history

Calabria is an ancient land, and in many aspects still undiscovered.

There are many accounts regarding its prehistoric era, with the colonization of the Bruzi, the autoctono population up until Magna Grecia: There remain traces of fundamental importance regarding European history and culture. The archeological excavations at Sibari, Borgia, Locri and Roccelletta have also revealed numerous relics which can be found in the museums of Reggio Calabria, Crotone and Cosenza.

The main ethnic races that have influenced the land of Calabria commence from the ancient Greeks to the Romans, the Goti Lombardi, the Byzantines, the Normans, the Svevi, the Angioini, the Aragonese, the Bourbons and the Savoia. Each of them left tangible signs of their presence, in the fields of architecture, art, language and in local customs.

The whole artistic heritage of Calabria has been influenced by these historical periods and presents a constant reminder: Think about the Bronze of Riace, the Byzantine churches of Motta San Giovani, of Montebello and Condofuri; There are also the castles of Gerace, Stilo, Bova and of Vibo Valentia; The "Codex Purpureus Rossanensis" from a Syrian provenance, which are kept in Rossano; The paintings of Mattia Preti, Paolo from Milleto and the scripts of Folco Ruffo of Calabria, Galeazzo from Tarsia, Tommaso Campanella, Vincenzo Padula, Nicola Misasi, Corrado Alvaro and Leonida Repaci from Palmi.
